I was about nine years old when I first encountered the Eds and their
outlandish ideas. Something about the humor and exaggerated sound effects made it one of my favorite shows of all time. Although crude in some respects, I
would not enjoy a life without them.  “Ed, Edd, n Eddy” is a Canadian-American, animated comedy introduced by Danny Antonucci, and produced by Canada-based a.k.a Cartoon Inc. It premiered via Cartoon Network on January 4, 1999. The premise of the show consists of over-the-top schemes concocted by three adolescent friends to obtain jawbreakers, who also possess the same name. The boys compose devious scams on the fellow residents of the cul-de-sac, on which most of the setting takes place, to acquire the funds to purchase their beloved jawbreakers. Their scams have ranged from selling turkey basters as water guns, to conducting boat rides via tire tubes. Unfortunately, their plans on most occasions, fail miserably, and the boys are forced to do without. The primary fun factor of the show is driven by the intense persistence of the trio to acquire candy and the chaos
created by it.

The characters of the show vary greatly. The primary trio encompasses Ed, the dimwit of the group whose ignorance and
clumsiness assists in the failure of the group’s endeavors; Edd, also known as“Double-D,” the brain on the group, possesses the most attention to detail, and is a neat freak. Finally, Eddy, the self-appointed leader of the group, is the primary deviser and drive of the show’s comedic effect. Together, the trio’s diversity creates a strong bond that makes the show a spectacle. The supporting cast consists of bullies, a “pretty girl,” siblings, stalkers, a farmer-boy, odd-balls, and all the shenanigans that accompany such a diverse cast. In one episode, the boys’ plans may be foiled by one’s younger, annoying sister, while
another demonstrates the boy’s desire to obtain the attention of the cul-de-sac’s attractive girl. In essence, the cast create a quirky and weird universe that many youth can find hilarious.

This show was created for children seven years and older, but parents must take into account some of its negative attributes. The show’s dialogue between the cast consists of constant name-calling such as “dork” and “stupid”. The series also possesses deceptive behavior such as the boys lying and stealing to take advantage of their neighbors. Finally, there really is not any measurable adult supervision, or discipline. The children run around the neighborhood, on their own. Although the show has some unhealthy characteristics, there is a lot of positivity as well.

The show positively promotes strong friendships that can outweigh any obstacle, or misunderstandings. Whenever one of the boys hurts another, they are able to reconcile their differences and reunite. Another strength of the show is the immense work ethic. The boys demonstrate how desire, persistence and drive will eventually pay off. The creativity, and out-of-the-box innovation developed by the cast, can be a benefit to any age group.

In conclusion, “Ed, Edd, n Eddy” will always be a classic in my eyes. The boy’s boisterous attitudes never aged in my opinion. The originality of the television show made it stand out amongst others. Although it possessed some negative behavior, I feel it can be outshined by the hilarity and genuine quality. Fortunately, at my age, I was able to differentiate right from wrong. Parents may want to provide some guidance to their younger children about verbal insults, and respecting one’s neighbor “Ed, Edd, n Eddy’officially ended in November 2009, but can still be viewed as reruns on channels such as Boomerang.

My name is Sandy and I am currently enrolled at TAMUK in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. I completely loved your article about Ed, Edd n Eddy! I can recall that as a child I loved to watch these boys get in trouble just to obtain a few jawbreakers. Being a girl I know many of my friends didn't like them because they seemed rude, but I loved them! Great article, it really brings back memories.
